When Life Hands You Lemons

Drink Limoncello! A bottle of Pallini Limoncello found its way to my desk for reviewing, and I had to stifle a grin. Limoncello? As in, the delicious, refreshing, Summer-in-a-bottle Italian liqueur I have come to know and love? Well, shoot. If you need me to sample and review, I guess I can handle it. :)

Pallini Limoncello is our most popular line of limoncello. It’s made from lemons grown on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. You just pictured vast coastlines, warm breezes and bright blue ocean, right? That’s Amalfi. If it’s possible, you can actually taste the ocean breeze. The liqueur itself is made in the shadow of the Pantheon, right in the heart of Rome. Pallini is a brand steeped in history and excellence.

Now onto the review.

Up the Nose: This is the part where I write about the smell. I opened up the bottle, took a whiff, and audibly sighed. This is the stuff (citrus) dreams are made of. Lemon candy, liquified and bottled with a 26% alcohol punch (though the punch is really more of a soft jab to the shoulder.)

Down the Hatch: Now we drink. The mouthfeel is incredibly smooth, almost like velvet. You will pucker- this is sweet stuff. Swirl it around and it’s all lemon, lemon, lemon with a sugar base. It goes down smooth, with just a little warmth in the chest. The burn is nonexistent. You should drink this very, very cold  or over ice, but it would almost be a shame to mix it.

The verdict? Here’s what I think. I think you should invite your entire extended family over for a nice meal. Make some meatballs and gravy, sit around the table and mangia. After a few courses, while you digest and try to make room for the Sfoliatelles, grab a bottle of Pallini Limoncello out of the freezer and pour a round for everyone (over 21 years of age, of course.) Sit, sip and enjoy your family.

That’s what I think this liqueur is all about. It’s not meant to be enjoyed alone, but rather con tutta la famiglia. Salute!
