Winemaker Tasting with Christian Sauska

** In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and the Winter Storm soon after, we have postponed this event – to be determined in the near future – We wish everyone a safe and prosperous recovery **

Christian Sauska is coming to Amity Wine and Spirit, Co to lead us in tasting his line of Sauska Wines. If you’re familiar with Sauska Wines, you are already excited. If you’re not yet familiar, please allow me to shed some light on the man, the myth and most importantly – the wine.

Hungarian-born businessman Christian Sauska always felt a strong connection to his homeland while achieving great success in the United States. His lifelong passion for food and wine became a natural segue to a dream of creating unique, high – quality wines from Hungary, a first of their kind. He dove right in- sparing no expense, even hiring highly acclaimed enologist and agronomist Stefano Chioccioli as a consultant. The goal from the beginning was to create limited quantities of high-quality, handcrafted artisan wines. And they have done just that.

The home of Sauska Wines, Sauska Tokaj in northeastern Hungary holds the production facility, cellars and tasting room for Sauska wines. The grapes are planted on 13 plots covering 100 acres, and even though the area is steeped in tradition, the innovative winemakers at Sauska are constantly experimenting to blend native Hungarian grapes (i.e Furmint and Harslevelu) with international varieties (i.e Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.) The result is a totally unique, avant-garde style of wine for which the future is tremendously bright.

The constant innovation brought on a need for a second estate, and that’s how the Sauska Villany came to be. Villany consists of six plots covering 150 acres, blending the native and international grapes as Tokaj does. These wines are handcrafted by a young wine making team. Their goal is to create clean, balanced wines that simultaneously reflect the rare terroir of Hungary. Sauska Villany wines are a representation of a harmonious marriage between innovation and technology, and precise manual labor.
